Mercedes-AMG claims its GLC63 S 4Matic+ is now the fastest series production SUV to lap the Nürburgring Nordschleife, grabbing the record from the Alfa Romeo Stelvio Quadrifoglio Verde.

Mercedes-Benz’s Affalterbach-based performance arm says the GLC63 S lapped the ‘Ring in 7:49,369 minutes – more than two seconds quicker than the time managed by its Italian foe back in September 2017.

AMG development engineer Markus Hofbauer was the man at the helm when the GLC63 S set the record time “at the first attempt”.

As a reminder, the twin-turbo 4,0-litre V8 under the SUV’s bonnet churns out 375 kW and 700 N.m, which is delivered to all four corners via a nine-speed automatic transmission. Acceleration from zero to 100 km/h takes a claimed 3,8 seconds, while top speed is electronically limited to 250 km/h.

The high-performance SUV features air suspension with adaptive adjustable damping, 4Matic+ all-wheel drive (with fully variable torque distribution), a rear-axle limited-slip differential and a high-performance braking system.

Slotting in above the V6-powered GLC43 models, the GLC63 S 4Matic+ will currently set you back R1 579 282 in standard guise and R1 695 291 in coupé form. Edition 1 variants are also still offered in South Africa.
