The Mercedes-AMG Project One is set to be the fastest production car ever to bear the Three-pointed Star but AMG head Tobias Moers has reportedly confirmed it will not set a lap time on the legendary Nurburgring.

According to Motoring.com.au, Moers believes the Project One will in fact be faster than the Porsche 919 Evo, which is the current record holder.

“Could we beat the Porsche’s ‘Ring time? We could, probably. It would be close, but I think we could. I just don’t know what we’d do it for,” Moers told the Australian publication.

He went on to explain that, while the 919 Evo is an impressive feat, it's an entirely different prospect to the AMG.

“It’s not a production car and ours is. Theirs is a racing car that isn’t actually fit to race anywhere, in any class, anywhere. It doesn’t have any rules. We have to meet full homologation rules. We could do some things to the aero and take out the air-conditioner and fit some slightly different tyres and then I’d be confident about it. But we’re not going to do that.”
