Mercedes-Benz has announced that a special Mercedes-AMG S65 Final Edition model will be revealed at the upcoming Geneva International Motor Show, effectively signalling the death of the V12 in its S-Class sedan range.

In press material released ahead of the Swiss show, the Stuttgart-based firm points out that the S65 Final Edition “crowns and brings to an end the long success story of the 6,0-litre V12 biturbo engine in the S-Class saloon”.

Of course, as Motor1 points out, Daimler has suggested the V12 will live on in its Mercedes-Maybach products, although it’s unclear for exactly how long.

In the Mercedes-AMG S65 L currently offered in South Africa (priced from R 3 642 414), the twin-turbo 12-cylinder unit generates 463 kW and a pleasingly round (and lofty!) 1 000 N.m, directed to the rear wheels via a seven-speed automatic transmission. The Affalterbach-based firm says this is enough for a 4,2-second blast from standstill to 100 km/h.

In Geneva, the firm will also display its SLC Final Edition and SL Grand Edition, and furthermore reveal the new CLA Shooting Brake, the facelifted GLC and an electrified MPV. The updated V-Class, a Formula E showcar and the smart forease+ will also be present.
