When the new Mercedes-Benz A-Class hatch was revealed back in February 2018, the Stuttgart-based brand shared details of just three engines. But the automaker has just released information about two additional diesel powerplants now offered in Europe.

In addition to the petrol-powered A200 and A250 engines already offered in South Africa, and the oil-burning A180d on its way to local shores in 2019, Mercedes-Benz has announced the A200d and A220d. Whether these units will be considered for SA, however, remains to be seen.

The A200d employs a 2,0-litre turbodiesel engine churning out 110 kW and 320 N.m of torque, and capable of propelling the hatchback to 100 km/h from standstill in a claimed 8,1 seconds (with an electronically limited top speed of 220 km/h).

Meanwhile, the A220d uses an engine of the same capacity but tuned to offer 140 kW and 400 N.m. Mercedes-Benz says this model will complete the zero to 100 km/h dash in 7,0 seconds before topping out at 235 km/h.

Both the A200d and A220d come standard with an eight-speed dual-clutch transmission.

For the record, the SA-bound A180d makes use of a 1,5-litre turbodiesel engine mated to a seven-speed dual-clutch. This unit is worth 85 kW and 260 N.m, with a claimed 10,5-second sprint to three figures.
