Mercedes-Benz has released a new version of its X-Class double-cab bakkie in its home market of Germany, with the special-edition X² derivative offered in as many as 100 colours … including pink.

From what we can tell, only the Munich, Nuremberg, Würzburg and Augsburg branches of the Daimler-backed brand will sell this special model. It will be offered in two forms: the four-cylinder X250d 4Matic Power (with 140 kW and 450 N.m) and the six-cylinder X350d 4Matic Power (with 190 kW and 550 N.m). Each ships standard with a seven-speed automatic transmission.

The X² model benefits from a suspension upgrade, hiking ground clearance to 300 mm (that’s 100 mm more than the standard model offered in Germany and some 80 mm more than the version we get here in South Africa). This, says the automaker, not only improves the bakkie's off-road abilities but also provides space for larger tyres, with the X²'s standard matte black alloys wrapped in Baja STZ 265/60 R18 rubber from Mickey Thompson.

The Stuttgart-based automaker says there are some 100 colour options available for the X², with the wrapping process offering gloss, matte, metallic, brushed-metal and carbon finishes. Should you order your X-Class in one of these, er, "interesting" new hues, though, prepare to shell out an extra €4 165 (that’s about R67 000).

Various accessories – such as a styling bar and a sliding load-bay cover – are also available for the special-edition model.
