The Mini brand has finally confirmed it will launch a new John Cooper Works GP model at some point in 2020.

The BMW-backed automaker confirmed the news in a press release detailing four special-edition models due to debut at the upcoming Los Angeles Auto Show.

The series production version of the new John Cooper Works GP (set to be based on the facelifted hatchback) is expected to draw inspiration from the concept of the same name, which debuted as a design study at the Frankfurt Motor Show back in September 2017.

While Mini provided no other details of the upcoming model, we can expect the production version to adopt a chunky body kit complete with a cheeky rear wing. A lower, more rigid suspension set-up also seems likely, while the braking system will surely be suitably upgraded, too.

Under the bonnet, the familiar turbocharged 2,0-litre four-cylinder petrol engine will, of course, make more than the standard JCW’s 170 kW and 320 N.m – although exactly how much more has yet to be established.

It's also not yet clear how many units will be produced, what with the 2012 John Cooper Works GP and 2006 Cooper S with John Cooper Works GP Kit (yes, that was its official name) having each been limited to 2 000 examples.
