Mitsubishi Motors South Africa has confirmed a new Triton Xtreme variant will join its bakkie range in July 2020, before the facelifted Pajero Sport arrives later in the year.

In addition, the Japanese firm’s local arm says the seven-seater Xpander is now scheduled to hit South Africa early in 2021. The Xpander will be powered by a 77 kW 1,5-litre petrol engine and take on the likes of Honda's BR-V.

The Triton Xtreme, meanwhile, is described as an “even more attractive version of the top-selling 4x4 double-cab” variant. Mitsubishi SA says it will be available in “limited numbers” at a “small premium” over the existing 4x4 automatic flagship.

According to the company, the Triton Xtreme offers a “host of upgrades, based on customer feedback and valued at around R100 000, but at only R40 000 more than the current model”. For the record, the 2,4DI-D double-cab 4x4 auto on which this model is based is currently priced at R599 995.

And the facelifted Pajero Sport? Well, Mitsubishi says it will make its local debut “in good time for the December holiday season”. Interestingly, the range is expected to include a new Exceed variant “offering more tech” than the current derivatives.

No word on whether the Mirage budget car is still on the cards for a local launch...
