The new, second-generation Honda Brio hatchback has been revealed in Indonesia, boasting a fresh design and a larger luggage compartment.

The reveal comes after the unveiling of the Brio Amaze sedan in India in February 2018, and was previewed by the (unimaginatively named) Small RS Concept.

The second-generation hatchback’s wheelbase measures 2 405 mm, which represents a significant 60 mm increase over that of the original. The newcomer measures 3 815 mm long (that's a full 205 mm more than before), while width is unchanged at 1 680 mm.

The Japanese automaker says the result of the longer wheelbase is “a larger rear seating space” as well as a more generous boot, which grows from a claimed 175 litres to a far more useful 258 litres.

Interestingly, the hatch design of new Brio has changed from a large glass panel to a conventional tailgate that the automaker says opens 15 percent wider than that of the previous model. This, claims Honda, allows “excellent rear visibility” as well as offering “better security”.

From what we can tell, the naturally aspirated 1,2-litre four-cylinder i-VTEC petrol engine is carried over largely unchanged from the outgoing range, although it now offers 66 kW and 110 N.m (the current SA-spec model makes 65 kW and 109 N.m). Mated to a five-speed manual as standard, the Brio will also be offered with a continuously variable transmission (CVT).
