Kia has released details of the fresh "Blind-Spot View Monitor" feature that is set to debut in the new Sorento's instrument cluster.

Billed as a “second pair of eyes”, the system is linked to the vehicle’s indicators. How does it work? Well, a high-resolution video feed is displayed on the left or right side of the 12,3-inch digital instrument cluster if the driver indicates with another vehicle hidden in a blind spot.

The video feed briefly takes the place of either the speedometer or tachometer dial display, while still showing the driver the vehicle’s current speed. Wide-angle, high-resolution cameras – one hidden in each of the side-mirror housings – provide the feed.

Revealed in February 2020, the fourth-generation Sorento was expected to arrive in South Africa late in the year, although we suspect the COVID-19 pandemic will see the local launch pushed into 2021.

Of course, it remains to be seen whether this new blind-spot function will be offered locally; in Europe, it forms part of a package that includes a surround view monitor and parking collision-avoidance assist.

Likewise, local engine options have yet to be confirmed, although various powertrains have been detailed for other markets.
