The covers have come off the new Kia Soul at the 2018 Los Angeles Auto Show, with the Korean automaker describing the third-generation model as a “completely new yet familiar” vehicle.

The latest Soul retains its trademark boxy dimensions, but is slightly longer than before at 4 196 mm. While the vehicle’s width and height are unchanged, the wheelbase has been increased 30 mm to 2 600 mm. Kia says the luggage compartment opening is wider and lower, featuring a dual-level cargo board.

The new Soul boasts slim daytime running lights, a larger front grille (with a two-tone treatment), roof-rack mounting points, three-dimensional wraparound taillamps and distinctive new C-pillar garnish complete with the new “Soul” graphic.

Engine options for the US market will include a naturally aspirated 2,0-litre four-cylinder petrol unit and a 1,6-litre twin-scroll turbocharged four-pot (mated to a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission). A new Soul EV will also be offered in some markets.

Inside, the US-spec model will be available with a 10,25-inch colour touchscreen (as previewed in an earlier teaser), an infotainment system incorporating Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, and an eight-inch head-up display.

Interestingly, a new X-Line model (pictured below) will also be offered, complete with body cladding, chunkier overfenders, “offroad-inspired” accents, model-specific 18-inch alloys and optional two-tone paint.

Interestingly, Kia Motors SA says that "for the time being, the all-new Soul will only be produced in left-hand-drive configuration, and is therefore not expected to debut in South Africa".
