Lamborghini claims that its upcoming Aventador SVJ has smashed the lap record for production cars at the Nürburgring Nordschleife, registering a lap time of six minutes 44,97 seconds.

The maths boffins among you will already have calculated that this makes the Aventador SVJ some 2,27 seconds faster round the 20,6 km circuit than the previous record-holder, the Porsche 911 GT2 RS.

Official driver Marco Mapelli was the man at the wheel of the new model, which is set to be revealed in August.

The Italian automaker says the Aventador SVJ will feature a “higher power output”, with lightweight materials contributing to “the best weight-to-power ratio”. It will boast the brand’s active aerodynamics system with aero vectoring, as well as new aerodynamic features specific to the SVJ.

Lamborghini says the Aventador SVJ’s set-up has been “entirely re-engineered” to enhance its four-wheel drive system, rear-wheel steering and electronic stability control. New specifically developed Pirelli P Zero Corsa tyres will be standard, although for the lap-time attempt optional Pirelli P Zero Trofeo R rubber was used.

“The Aventador SVJ takes the Jota suffix, following the Lamborghini tradition for denoting a car’s track-focused talent. This new car is the convergence of Lamborghini technologies to produce a super sports car that transcends current performance benchmarks,” said Lamborghini CEO, Stefano Domenicali.

“Its tenure as the Nürburgring lap time record holder, even before its unveiling during the Monterey Car Week in California in August, endorses Lamborghini’s competence in applying superlative design engineering and ground-breaking technologies. The SVJ is a super sportscar at the zenith of performance, while also ensuring unrivalled driving pleasure.”
