The new Mercedes-AMG GLE53 4Matic+ has been revealed, with the brand’s Affalterbach-based performance division handing the SUV its latest electrified powertrain.

The performance SUV also gains the firm’s fully variable all-wheel-drive system, a nine-speed automatic transmission, AMG-specific driving modes and an AMG-tuned air suspension setup.

As with other 53-badged models (such as the Mercedes-AMG E53), the powertrain features twin-turbocharging and an electric auxiliary compressor. The 3,0-litre inline six-cylinder engine itself makes 320 kW and 520 N.m, while the so-called “EQ Boost” starter generator briefly provides an extra 16 kW and 250 N.m, and additionally feeds the 48 V on-board electrical system.

The result? Well, Mercedes-AMG says the GLE53 will blast from standstill to 100 km/h in 5,3 seconds before topping out at an electronically limited 250 km/h. A new AMG Performance exhaust system with adjustable flaps will be optional and allows the sound of the vehicle to be changed at the prod of a button.

As we’ve pointed out before, the EQ Boost arrangement combines a starter motor and alternator in an electric motor and is fitted between the engine and transmission. The electric auxiliary compressor, meanwhile, builds up what Mercedes-Benz describes as “a high level of boost pressure without any delays” before the turbo comes on song.

The GLE53 gains an AMG-specific grille (complete with 15 vertical chromed strips), slats in the outer air inlets and a silver chrome-plated finish for the front splitter. A set of 20-inch light alloy wheels (with AMG lettering) ships standard, although seven variants are optionally available, sized from 20 to 22 inches.

Round back, you’ll notice the horizontal chromed diffuser strip in the rear apron and the pair of chromed twin tailpipes. The optional AMG Night Package, meanwhile, adds tinted windows plus a black finish for elements such as the front splitter, parts of the front apron, the side-mirror caps, window frames, roof railing, diffuser and tailpipe trim.

Inside, the GLE53 features AMG-specific faux-leather seats with red contrasting stitching, along with a black roof liner, an AMG Performance steering wheel and various trim elements in aluminium “brushed with light longitudinal grain”. As with the standard new GLE, this version can be specified with a foldable third row of seats, turning the GLE53 into a fully fledged seven-seater.
