Audi has taken the wraps off its new AI:ME concept at Auto Shanghai 2019, billing it as a “visionary mobility concept for the megacities of the future”.

The show car – which seems to take on the general shape of the old Audi A2 – offers compact dimensions, what looks like a pretty spacious cabin and the ability to drive autonomously at Level 4.

Featuring a length of 4 300 mm and a width of 1 900 mm, the show car benefits from a wheelbase measuring some 2 770 mm. Audi says this, along with the electric drive architecture (the drive unit is positioned on the rear axle and churns out 125 kW), allows for a “large-volume” interior.

The Ingolstadt-based firm describes its AI:ME concept as a “two-plus-x-seater”, boasting a variety of configurations for seat positions and stowage space. It features large areas on the cockpit cover and between the front seats that hide magnets, which serve as cup holders (and hold metal cups or plates in place).

Audi says the front seats were inspired by the classic lounge chair and feature a wide, “comfortably cushioned” seat, upholstered with grey textile material. When the pedals are not needed, drivers can rest their feet on supports under the dashboard. On the rear bench, which reaches round to the side sections of the vehicle, occupants have the option of varying their seating position.
