An Audi executive has admitted that the German automaker is "looking at" the possibility of adding a hotter SQ2 to its new mini-SUV range.

According to Auto Express, the all-wheel-drive Audi SQ2 would likely pilfer the 2,0-litre four-cylinder turbocharged petrol engine from the S3, which would give it more than 200 kW.

"It is something we're looking at. It would be relatively easy to do with MQB ," said Stefan Knirsch, member of the board of management for technical development.

"The Q2 shares a lot with the A3, but we have to see what appetite there is for the more expensive Q2 models first," he added.

But Auto Express furthermore reported that "insiders" at the Ingolstadt automaker suggest the five-cylinder mill from the RS3 could also find its way into the Audi Q2, with an RS Q2 being the result.

The new Audi Q2 is scheduled to arrive in South Africa in the first quarter of 2017, so if a hotter version does indeed follow, it'll likely be some time in 2018 at the very earliest.
