BMW has revealed two new M Performance models, giving its X5 and X7 the M50i treatment. Both of these V8-powered SUVs have already been confirmed for South Africa.

The new X5 M50i and the X7 M50i (joining M50d variants in the respective ranges) will be produced from August 2019 at the Munich-based firm’s plant in Spartanburg in the United States, with their local introductions scheduled for October 2019.

So, how much are you looking at here? Well, the BMW X5 M50i will start from R1 511 689, while the BMW X7 M50i will kick off at R1 871 542.

Both employ the automaker’s latest twin-turbo 4,4-litre V8 petrol unit, worth 390 kW and 750 N.m (the latter from 1 800 all the way through to 4 600 r/min). In the case of the X5 M50i, this translates to a zero to 100 km/h sprint in a claimed 4,3 seconds, with the heavier X7 M50i taking some four-tenths longer.

The V8 engine is combined with the firm’s xDrive all-wheel-drive system, eight-speed Steptronic sports transmission, M sports differential, M sport exhaust system and model-specific suspension technology. The X5 M50i is equipped with adaptive M suspension, while the X7 M50i benefits from adaptive dual-axle air suspension (also available optionally for the former).

Visually, the new models are set apart from standard versions thanks to “extra-large” air inlets in the front apron, a unique design for the side-sills (and rear apron), the standard fitment of the BMW individual high-gloss Shadow Line as standard, and selected design elements in Cerium Grey.

Inside each of these new M Performance models, you’ll find an M leather steering wheel, a gear selector lever bearing the M logo and Vernasca leather upholstery (with contrast stitching and perforated surfaces). Illuminated entry sills displaying the “M50i” logo plus a headliner in Anthracite (in the case of the X5 M50i) or Alcantara Anthracite (for the X7 M50i) are also included.
