BMW Group South Africa has confirmed fresh “First Edition” variants of the new X5 M Competition and X6 M Competition are coming to local roads.

Set to arrive in the first half of 2021 (somewhat strangely, considering the "standard" models are already here), we’re guessing South Africa will receive just a small handful of each version, what with global production limited to 250 units in each case.

So, what sets the First Edition models apart? Well, the BMW Individual Frozen Dark Silver special paint finish you see applied to the X6 M Competition in the accompanying images will be exclusive to the special-edition models, although each model can also be specified in a BMW Individual Frozen Marina Bay Blue finish (as applied to the X5 M Competition in the gallery above).

Also included are model-specific M light-alloy wheels (measuring 21 inches fore and 22 inches aft) in a star-spoke design and featuring a Jet Black high-gloss finish. The upgrade furthermore includes various elements fashioned from carbon-fibre-reinforced plastic, such as the side-mirror caps, rear spoiler and engine compartment cover.

Inside, you’ll find Merino full leather trim in Silverstone/Midnight Blue, with black Alcantara inserts on the seat bolsters and contrast stitching in Sakhir Orange (the latter repeated on the door panel trim and instrument panel). The Alcantara headliner is likewise finished in Midnight Blue, while yet more carbon is scattered round the cabin.

BMW has also included silver-coloured “First Edition 1/250” lettering, which is applied to the carbon-fibre strip on the facia before the clear-coat seal. If specified, this design is repeated on the cover for the cup holders.

Under the bonnet, no changes have been made, with the twin-turbo 4,4-litre V8 petrol engine delivering 460 kW and 750 N.m to all four corners via a rear-wheel-biased M xDrive setup.
