BMW has lifted the covers off its facelifted X1, handing the entry point to its crossover range fresh styling, including a larger kidney grille.

The updated X1 comes after the reveal of the new 1 Series hatchback.

Up front, the most obvious change to the X1 is the adoption of a larger grille – with the “kidneys” merging in the centre – while new adaptive LED headlamps and a bumper with integrated LED foglamps and larger air intakes have also been added.

Round back, there a new inlay in the body-colour rear apron, while the driver-side side mirror now projects a two-tone “X1” LED image when the vehicle is unlocked.

Furthermore, three new exterior colours – Jucaro Beige metallic, Misano Blue metallic (exclusively for the M Sport model) and BMW Individual Storm Bay metallic – have been added to the range, along with four fresh alloy wheel designs.

The Munich-based firm says each of the model variants – base, xLine, Sport Line and M Sport – has been given a “standalone visual presence tailored precisely to its character profile”. The X1 M Sport, for instance, gains lowered suspension, an aerodynamics package and the BMW Individual high-gloss Shadow Line pack.

While the local range has yet to be confirmed, power in Europe will again come from a range of three- and four-cylinder petrol and diesel engines, starting with the X1 sDrive16d (offered with either a six-speed manual gearbox or seven-speed dual-clutch transmission) generating 85 kW and 270 N.m.

The X1 xDrive25d, meanwhile, makes 170 kW and 450 N.m, hitting 100 km/h from standstill in a claimed 6,6 seconds. The X1 xDrive25i boasts the same peak power figure and teams up with an eight-speed Steptronic transmission to complete the obligatory sprint one-tenth quicker.

The refreshed range will also welcome the first X1 with plug-in hybrid drive system. Due to enter production in March 2020, the X1 xDrive25e will be fitted with a 9,7 kWh battery, allowing it to cover more than 50 km on electric power alone.

Inside, you’ll find new contrast stitching on the instrument panel, which is black on its upper section and adopts the colour of the interior upholstery lower down. The floor mats, too, gain coloured edging and contrast stitching.

The updated X1 features a centrally mounted 6,5-inch screen as standard, but if a navigation system is specified, either an 8,8-inch or the new 10,25-inch display comes as part of the package.
