Renault has taken the wraps off its facelifted Mégane, handing the C-segment hatchback subtly updated styling, a refreshed cabin and a new RS Line trim level.

Last we heard, the facelifted Mégane was due to launch in South Africa as early as March 2020.

So, what’s changed with this mid-cycle update? Well, the “renewed and modernised” cockpit features a new 9,3-inch multimedia display and a fresh 10,2-inch dashboard screen. In addition, new driving aids (such as a “motorway and traffic assistant”) will be offered in some markets. From the outside, the main update is the adoption of fresh LED headlamps.

In addition, the old GT Line trim level has been replaced by an RS Line version, which the French firm says adds an even “sportier look”.

And under the bonnet? Well, while the engine line-up appears to have been carried over unchanged, Europe will receive a new plug-in hybrid variant, which combines a 1,6-litre four-cylinder petrol engine with two electric motors and a multimode clutchless gearbox.

With its 9,8 kWh (400 V) battery capacity, Renault says the Mégane E-Tech Plug-in can be driven on electric power alone at speeds of up to 135 km/h, with an all-electric range of between 50 and 65 km.

The Mégane RS Trophy remains at the sharp end of the range, with its turbocharged 1,8-litre engine still offering 220 kW (and 420 N.m in the case of the dual-clutch model or 400 N.m for the manual variant). This flagship performance model is scheduled to arrive in South Africa in the final quarter of 2020.
