Volkswagen has finally taken the wraps off Variant and Alltrack versions of the Golf 8, but don’t expect to see these wagons in South Africa.

No, these models will at first be exclusive to certain European markets, before rolling out to other select countries. The South African buying public’s apparent aversion to estate models will surely mean these newcomers don’t make it to local shores.

So, what are we missing out on? Well, the Wolfsburg-based firm says the new Golf Variant (seen here in R Line trim) has grown compared with its predecessor, now measuring 4 633 mm from nose to tail. Its wheelbase has increased too, with some 2 686 mm between the axles in this latest model.

The result, says VW, is more interior room and a mite more luggage space (the latter is a claimed 611 litres, expanding to a whopping 1 642 litres with the rear bench folded down).

And the new Golf Alltrack? Well, this model will ship standard in 4Motion all-wheel-drive guise, while also being distinguished by added ground clearance and obligatory black plastic cladding.

In Europe, the Golf Variant and Alltrack are likely to be offered with the majority of the powertrain options available in the hatchback, with a full-fat Golf R Variant surely on the horizon, too.
