Mercedes-Benz has subtly updated its G-Class, handing the off-roader more standard equipment and a new “Desert” driving mode.

All units produced from the start of September 2020 will gain the upgrades. In addition, the Stuttgart-based firm says it will expand its personalisation options through the “G manufaktur” programme.

New exterior paint colours and equipment packages, as well as the now-standard widescreen cockpit and frameless rear-view mirror, have also been added. The parking package, complete with a reversing camera, is furthermore now part of the standard equipment list.

So, what about that new "Desert" drive programme? Well, Benz says it’s designed for “maximum traction on sandy terrain”, delivering the “perfect interplay of late upshifting, direct throttle response and adjusted ESP control”.

Interestingly, the Night Package can now be ordered without the “AMG Line” and “Stainless Steel” packages, comprising heat-insulating dark-tinted glass along with an obsidian black metallic finish for the side-mirror caps and grille. Darkened indicators, reversing lamps and headlamps are also included in the pack.

Mercedes has also introduced new 20-inch five-twin-spoke light-alloy wheels, available exclusively for models specified with the AMG Line kit. These new alloys boast a high-sheen finish and are painted in a choice of high-gloss black or himalaya grey.

The G-Class furthermore gains “greater anti-theft protection” thanks to the introduction of new “Urban Guard” packages.

As a reminder, the G-Class range in South Africa currently comprises the G400d and Mercedes-AMG G63.
