Mitsubishi Motors South Africa has confirmed it plans to launch the facelifted Mirage hatchback locally at some point in 2020.

“The new city-smart Mirage is planned to be launched in SA in 2020 and we expect this fuel-efficient, compact vehicle to further enhance our commitment to a price-sensitive but fun-seeking road-user,” said Nic Campbell, general manager of Mitsubishi Motors SA.

Campbell went on to say the “launch date, product line-up and specification levels” will be confirmed early in 2020 ahead of the local launch.

The Mirage budget hatchback, of course, quietly exited South Africa in 2017, so it's interesting the Japanese firm’s local arm plans to revive the nameplate.

The updated Mirage gains fresh styling (most noticeable up front), new exterior paint colours, revised wheel options and a handful of changes to the cabin (including the addition of a seven-inch display). From what we understand, the naturally aspirated 1,2-litre three-cylinder petrol engine, delivering 58 kW and 100 N.m to the front wheels, has been carried over.

Like the SA-bound Xpander Cross, the facelifted Mirage is built in Thailand.
