Mitsubishi in Thailand has revealed the new Athlete version of its Triton, handing the double-cab bakkie some model-specific styling cues and a dash of extra kit.

Offered in a choice of three exterior colours, the Triton Athlete features a black roof, black side steps and black front bumper garnish. There’s also an integrated styling bar and bed liner (in, you guessed it, black) plus special decals running along the flanks, in addition to 18-inch black alloys wrapped in 265/60 rubber.

Inside, you’ll find a leather-trimmed steering wheel with orange contrast stitching (a treatment repeated on the gear lever) and two-tone leather seats (with the front pews bearing the “Athlete” logo), as well as branded floor mats.

Under the bonnet, though, Mitsubishi has opted not to make any changes. And that means the 2,4-litre turbodiesel mill still generates 133 kW and 430 N.m, channelled to either just the rear wheels or to all four corners via a six-speed automatic transmission.

So, will we see this variant join the Triton range in South Africa? Well, there’s certainly a chance, seeing that the pre-facelift version of the Athlete hit the local market back in March 2018...
