BMW has taken the wraps off its new Concept i4, which it bills as a preview of an upcoming production pure-electric gran coupé.

The show car represents what the Munich-based firm terms a “look ahead to the BMW i4”, which is scheduled to enter production in 2021 as the BMW Group’s first all-electric model in the premium midsize segment.

The electric powertrain offers an output up to 390 kW and a claimed range of 600 km. BMW says the vehicle will hit 100 km/h from standstill in “approximately 4,0 seconds” before topping out “in excess of 200 km/h”.

With four doors, the Concept i4 takes on a fairly familiar profile, largely mimicking the proportions of BMW’s existing gran coupé models. The battery weighs “roughly 550 kg”, with an energy content of around 80 kWh.

Interestingly, while a hefty kidney grille (which the firm itself describes as “prominent”) has been incorporated, it has been blanked off. It now serves primarily as an “intelligence panel” housing various sensors.

Inside, the Concept i4 features a new curved display that BMW says offers a look ahead to the display set to be used in the production versions of the BMW iNext and i4. Here, the presentation surfaces of the information display and control display merge into a single unit angled towards the driver.

“The BMW Concept i4 brings electrification to the core of the BMW brand,” says Adrian van Hooydonk, senior vice-president for BMW Group Design. “The design is dynamic, clean and elegant. In short: a perfect BMW that happens to be zero emission.”
