BMW has released initial technical details of its new 4 Series (along with images of a camouflaged example undergoing testing), while also confirming a new M440i xDrive variant.

The Munich-based firm says the latest version of its 4 Series coupé is in the “final phase of dynamic testing”.

The company claims the 4 Series coupé’s chassis technology is a “more individual composition than ever before” and promises “exhilarating dynamic performance”. According to BMW, the new 4 Series will be more aerodynamic than its 3 Series sibling, with a roofline 57 mm lower than that of the sedan (and its centre of gravity some 21 mm closer to the ground, too).

BMW says there’s also “increased negative camber” at the front wheels and a 23 mm wider rear track to “sharpen the car’s handling characteristics by a significant degree”.

Ahead of inevitable arrival of the full-fat M4, the new 4 Series range will be topped by a fresh M440i xDrive variant. Its turbocharged 3,0-litre line-six petrol engine will deliver 275 kW, while also featuring 48 V mild-hybrid technology. An additional 8 kW will be generated via the latter's electric boost function, which the German firm says will allow “lightning-fast off-the-line getaways and in-gear sprints”.

As its name suggests, the new M440i xDrive will feature BMW’s all-wheel-drive system (as well as an eight-speed Steptronic Sport transmission). There’s also an M Sport differential, M Sport brakes and 18-inch M light-alloy wheels with mixed-size tyres.
