Fresh footage of the new BMW M4 undergoing testing has been published online, giving us our first real chance to hear the performance coupé in action.

The eagle-eyed, camera-wielding folks over at Auto Addiction posted a two-minute clip on YouTube showing a camouflaged G82-generation M4 prototype being thrashed round the Nürburgring Nordschleife.

Turn up the volume and have a listen to the twin-turbo 3,0-litre inline-six breathing out through a suitably vocal exhaust system.

While the Munich-based firm has yet to confirm peak outputs for the new M4, BMW M CEO Markus Flasch previously stated the new M4 would have “the most powerful engine in the segment”.

Flasch’s comments suggest the top-spec Competition version of the new coupé will boast more than the 375 kW churned out by the straight-six used in the X3 M Competition and X4 M Competition. At the time, Flasch also confirmed both manual and automatic variants were being developed, alongside rear-driven and all-paw models.

The new M4 is expected to hit the market in 2021. The new 4 Series (including an M440i xDrive variant), meanwhile, is likely to be revealed in the next few weeks.
