BMW South Africa has released pricing for its new M8 Competition Coupé and M8 Competition Convertible models ahead of their local launch.

Revealed in June 2019, the flagship Competition-badged variants are expected to hit local roads at some point in the final quarter of the year. From what we understand, the standard (non-Competition) models are no longer on the cards for SA.

So, how much are you looking at here? Well, the M8 Competition Coupé will start at R2 958 053, while the M8 Competition Convertible will kick off at R3 089 486. That makes these new variants the most expensive models in BMW SA's range, eclipsing even the M760Li.

Under the bonnet you’ll find what the Munich-based firm describes as the “most powerful engine ever developed for a BMW M car”, a twin-turbo 4,4-litre V8 developing 460 kW and 750 N.m in Competition guise.

An eight-speed M Steptronic transmission ships standard, directing drive to all four wheels via the Munich-based firm’s rear-biased M xDrive system (complete with the same sort of “2WD” mode that debuted on the M5).

The M8 Competition Coupé will complete the sprint to 100 km/h in a claimed 3,2 seconds (with the cabriolet one-tenth behind). Top speed for both derivatives is electronically limited to 250 km/h, although this can be optionally raised to 305 km/h.

M-specific adaptive suspension, including electronically controlled dampers and electromechanical M Servotronic steering, come standard, along with 20-inch M light-alloy wheels in a twin‑spoke design (wrapped in high-performance tyres measuring 275/35 R20 at the front and 285/35 R20 at the rear).
