BMW Group South Africa has released local pricing for its new X5 M Competition and X6 M Competition models.

Slotting in at the top of the X5 line-up above a pair of M Performance variants (X5 M50i and X5 M50d), the full-fat X5 M Competition is priced from R2 400 000. The X6 M Competition, meanwhile, starts at R2 493 000. Note that while both figures include VAT, they exclude CO2 emission tax (which increased at the start of April; expect some R26 358 to be added to the X5 M's price and R26 220 to be tacked onto the X6 M's price).

Scheduled to arrive in local dealerships from around May 2020 (although the launch could end up being delayed by the coronavirus pandemic), each of the high-performance SUVs employs a twin-turbo 4,4-litre V8 petrol engine delivering 460 kW and 750 N.m to all four corners via a rear-wheel-biased M xDrive setup (for the record, the standard, non-Competition derivatives have not been earmarked for our market).

The Munich-based firm claims the X5 M Competition will complete the blast from standstill to 100 km/h in just 3,8 seconds, a time matched by the X6 M Competition. Both variants top out at 290 km/h. An active M differential optimises traction and enhances the dynamic capabilities of both performance SUVs.

Although the local configurator is not yet live, we know standard features will include items such as M-specific adaptive suspension (with electronically controlled dampers) and active roll stabilisation. The X5 M Competition and X6 M Competition will ride on 21-inch alloys up front, with 22-inch items at the rear.

The interior is equipped with various M-specific items, including bespoke instrumentation, a head-up display and sports seats. Standard specification includes BMW’s Live Cockpit Professional infotainment system, complete with the latest Intelligent Personal Assistant arrangement.
