Ford Motor Company of Southern Africa says the new Mustang Mach 1 is “not yet confirmed” for a local introduction.

While the Mach 1 revealed in June 2020 for North America makes 358 kW and 569 N.m courtesy of its naturally aspirated 5,0-litre V8, the version just revealed for Europe has been detuned to 338 kW and 529 N.m. And it’s likely this engine tune (matching that of the Bullitt offered here) that will eventually come to South Africa if the Mach 1 indeed makes it way to local shores.

Offered with a “high-performance” Tremec six-speed manual transmission with a rev-matching function, the Mustang Mach 1 furthermore features an upgraded oil-cooler system. The Blue Oval brand’s 10-speed automatic transmission (with “recalibrated” software) will also be offered.

What else sets the Mach 1 apart from the standard Mustang GT? Well, it gains a model-specific suspension setup that “enhances road performance and track-readiness”. Indeed, specially calibrated MagneRide 2 dampers and bespoke springs, anti-roll bars and bush specifications have been fitted, while the electric power-assisted steering has been tuned for added precision.

“The original Mach 1 delivered the ultimate in production Mustang performance and proved itself with success in motorsport,” said Matthias Tonn, Mustang Mach 1 chief programme engineer for Europe.

“The new Mach 1 is the most capable Mustang ever to reach Europe, with track-ready ability and a unique style that is more than worthy of wearing such a legendary badge.”
