The new Audi A3 Sportback has finally been fully revealed, with the fourth-generation model featuring a sharper design inside and out.

The Ingolstadt-based firm says its new A3 Sportback offers “more space and functionality” compared with its predecessor. Measuring 4 340 mm long, the new five-door version has grown by a little more than three centimetres. Interestingly, though, its height of 1 430 mm and wheelbase of 2 640 mm remain unchanged.

Depending on the position of the rear bench seat, the luggage compartment can hold between 380 and 1 200 litres, while the loading floor can be inserted at different heights.

In Europe, the new A3 Sportback will be launched with a choice of three engines: a 1,5-litre, four-cylinder TFSI unit with 110 kW and a 2,0-litre, four-cylinder TDI that delivers either 85 kW or 110 kW. Initially, only front-driven variants will be offered, although all-paw versions are also on the cards. Power will be transmitted via a six-speed manual transmission or a seven-speed S tronic (the latter’s gear lever has morphed into a compact shifter).

Audi says “shortly after market launch” it will be “gradually expanding” the range to include further engine versions, including electrified drive systems and, of course, versions with Quattro.

A3 variants with 110 kW or more will feature a four-link rear axle (rather than torsion beam). Adaptive damper control will be optionally offered, which also lowers the body by 10 mm. The sport suspension – which will be standard in conjunction with the S line exterior package – features “tauter tuning” and a 15 mm drop in ride height.

Inside, Audi says the new A3 Sportback’s cockpit is “wholly focused” on the driver. It features the firm’s 10,1-inch touch display as standard, while the instrument cluster is also digital from the factory.
