Hyundai has unveiled is new Aura in India, with the small sedan positioned as a rival to the likes of the Honda Amaze and Suzuki DZire.

Based on the Grand i10 hatchback, the Aura sedan measures 3 995 mm nose to tail (and thus qualifies for India’s sub-four-metre class, which attracts a lower excise duty). It’s 1 680 mm wide and 1 520 mm tall, with a wheelbase of 2 450 mm. The Korean firm claims the result is rear legroom of 885 mm and a luggage capacity of 402 litres.

View the new Aura from the side and you’ll notice what Hyundai describes as the sloping “coupé-like” roofline as well as a set of 15-inch diamond-cut alloy wheels. Round back, the LED taillamps feature an unusual lens surround, with the two items connected by a chrome-and-black strip.

What’s happening under the bonnet? Well, the Aura debuts in India with the option of a 61 kW naturally aspirated 1,2-litre petrol engine, a 74 kW turbocharged 1,0-litre petrol unit and a 55 kW 1,2-litre diesel mill. Transmissions include a five-speed manual gearbox and a five-speed automated manual.

Inside, you’ll find an 8,0-inch touchscreen system incorporating Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, a 5,3-inch digital instrument cluster and even wireless smartphone charging.

While the new Grand i10 is expected to launch in South Africa in the second quarter of 2020, it remains to be seen whether the Aura will follow (it’s worth noting, though, the Xcent that preceded it didn’t ever make it to our shores).
