Hyundai Automotive South Africa has confirmed the new Venue will be offered with a turbocharged 1,0-litre petrol engine when it hits local roads late in 2019.

Speaking to CARmag.co.za at the local launch of the new Tucson Sport, Stanley Anderson, sales and operations director at Hyundai SA, said the locally offered version of the small SUV would employ the three-cylinder powerplant.

While peak outputs for the SA-spec model have yet to be confirmed, it’s worth noting this turbopetrol engine generates 88 kW and 172 N.m in the base Kona. Local transmission options have likewise yet to be announced (but, again, a six-speed manual ships standard in the Kona).

So, what sort of price-tag are we looking at here? Well, while the make-up of the local line-up is not yet known, Anderson suggested the new Venue would be priced somewhere in the region of R300 000. That, of course, would see it going head-to-head with the base model in the upcoming Volkswagen T-Cross range.

The fresh-faced Venue, revealed at the 2019 New York International Auto Show in April, will slot in at the bottom of the Korean brand’s burgeoning SUV range, below the Kona and Creta, with Hyundai billing it as the “most affordable” SUV in its line-up.

While its general (boxy) proportions may well remind you of the Creta, the entry-level Venue is actually quite a bit smaller. The Venue will be produced in South Korea and India, with SA-spec models set to be imported from the latter.
