Last month, we revealed pricing for the new Mahindra Scorpio SUV. And now the local arm of the Indian automaker has officially launched the redesigned, S10-badged SUV on local shores.

The newcomer runs on an all-new platform and is powered by the brand's familiar 2,2-litre turbodiesel engine, linked to a new five-speed manual transmission. There are two models in the local range: a 4x2 variant (R283 995) and a 4x4 (R299 995) derivative.

Inside, the new Scorpio features a six-inch touchscreen display and integrated satellite navigation, as well as automatic headlights, rain-sensing wipers and a tyre pressure monitoring system. Rear parking sensors are also standard, as are a height-adjustable driver's seat, tilt-adjustable steering and dual front airbags.

Mahindra says there's seating for up to eight occupants in the new Scorpio, with the rear bench – which is removable to free up more packing space – able to house three passengers.

The turbodiesel engine makes 88 kW and 280 N.m, with the latter available between 1 800 and 2 800 r/min.

The four-wheel drive model boasts a low-range transfer case, auto-locking hubs and a shift-on-the-fly function that switches from rear-wheel drive to four-wheel drive at speeds up to 100 km/h.
