What you’re looking at is the new Mercedes-AMG GLS63 4Matic+, a 450 kW/850 N.m performance SUV with seating for up to seven people.

Power comes from Affalterbach’s twin-turbo 4,0-litre V8 engine, which works with an integrated EQ Boost starter-alternator. The 16 kW/250 N.m ancillary unit supplies the 48 V electrical system, “briefly” offering a boost function to provide assistance at low engine speeds.

The obligatory blast from zero to 100 km/h thus takes a claimed 4,2 seconds, with top speed electronically limited to 250 km/h (though the German firm will happily raise that figure to 280 km/h should you specify the AMG Driver’s package).

Drive is directed to all four corners thanks to the fully variable all-wheel drive arrangement, via a nine-speed automatic transmission. Air suspension (allowing the ride height to be raised by up to 55 mm at the touch of a button) with active roll stabilisation is also included.

The new three-row GLS63 runs on 21-inch 10-spoke light-alloy wheels (painted in tantalite grey with a high-sheen finish) as standard, although six further wheel variants with diameters up to 23 inches are on offer.

At the front axle, braking is taken care of by hefty 400 x 38 mm internally ventilated and perforated discs, along with six-piston fixed callipers (the latter painted grey and featuring white “AMG” lettering). At the rear, the GLS63 uses internally ventilated integral discs measuring 370 x 32 mm, joined by a single-piston floating calliper.

Inside, you’ll find AMG sports pedals in brushed stainless steel, illuminated door sill panels with "AMG" lettering, branded black floor mats and the firm’s familiar widescreen cockpit featuring AMG-specific content (and, of course, the latest MBUX system). You’ll also notice the three-spoke AMG steering wheel.
