Mitsubishi Motors South Africa has confirmed an “imminent” local launch for the recently revealed Xpander Cross, which will do battle with the likes of the Toyota Rush and Honda BR-V.

Billed as a “crossover MPV”, the new seven-seater is based on the standard Xpander (which was first introduced in markets such as Indonesia back in 2017) but gains SUV-inspired styling.

Interestingly, the Xpander Cross is some 50 mm wider than the standard model, with ground clearance hiked by 20 mm to 225 mm. It furthermore gains black cladding on the wheel arches and the lower sections of the doors, along with higher-profile tyres on the 17-inch alloy wheels. Silver-coloured roof rails have also been added.

The newcomer draws its urge from a naturally aspirated 1,5-litre petrol engine generating 77 kW and 141 N.m, offered with either a five-speed manual or four-speed automatic transmission.

“Mitsubishi Motors South Africa started with the homologation process in preparation of the imminent launch of this vehicle in SA,” said Nic Campbell, general manager of Mitsubishi Motors South Africa.
