Back in June 2018, Porsche revealed its sleek 911 Speedster concept, before four months later confirming a production model was on the cards. Well, that production model has now been unveiled at the 2019 New York International Auto Show.

Conceived to celebrate the German brand's 70th anniversary in 2018, fittingly just 1 948 units will be produced.

You’ll no doubt have noticed the new Speedster is based on the previous version of the 911 rather than the latest 992-generation model. But that’s okay considering it’s powered by a version of the high-revving, naturally aspirated 4,0-litre flat-six engine used in that generation's GT3 and GT3 RS models.

The powerplant (here boasting individual throttle bodies) churns out around 370 kW and 470 N.m, accompanied by what Porsche describes as a “highly emotional, racing inspired soundtrack”. It’s mated exclusively with a six-speed manual gearbox.

The chassis has been “derived from the 911 GT3 models”, complete with a specifically calibrated rear axle steering system and dynamic engine mounts. The Speedster is fitted with 20-inch “Satin Black” alloys wrapped in high-performance tyres, while ceramic composite brakes ship standard.

Inside, you’ll find lightweight door panels (with storage nets and door pulls), while the front luggage compartment lid, front fenders and rear decklid are all fashioned from carbon-fibre composite material. The front and rear facia, meanwhile, consist of lightweight polyurethane.

The fabric top does without any automated operation, save for the electrically operated latch to lock and unlock it. Air conditioning is not fitted as standard (“in the interest of weight savings”, says Porsche), but can be added as a no-cost option...
