Porsche Motorsport has unveiled a new 935 ‘racer’ to celebrate its 70th anniversary.

The Stuttgart based automaker revealed this new 935 at Rennsport Reunion VI, currently taking place at WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca in California. Featuring a body reminiscent of the 1978 “Moby Dick” Le Mans race car, Porsche says this 515 kW ‘racer’ is a birthday present to fans all over the world.

This 935 will, however, not be used in Le Mans, seeing that it’s not homologated for championship racing. According to the Porsche’s Vice President of Motorsport and GT Cars, Dr Frank-Steffen Walliser, the reason for this was to allow the engineers and designers to not “follow the usual rules” and have “freedom” when developing this car. This 935 is expected to only be used on track days and clubsport events.

Based on the 991.2-generation GT2 RS, the 935 will be powered by a “state-of-the-art” 3,8-litre six-cylinder twin-turbo engine, which is largely identical to the unit found in its road-legal stablemate. But, like its predecessor, this new track focussed race car dropped its conventional body and replaced (or supplemented) it with carbon fibre composite parts. The  “streamlined” extended rear now reaches a length of 4,87 metres. 

The wheel arch air vents on this car’s front fairings, a feature also found on the 911 GT3 R, increase downforce at the front axle, while the almost two metre-wide (1 909 millimetres to be precise) rear wing lends aerodynamic balance. On the wing endplates, LED rear lights, adopted from the 919 Hybrid LMP1 race car, lights-up when braking. 

To decelerate this 1, 380 kg car, the front axle is fitted with six-piston aluminium monobloc racing callipers with 380-millimeter diameter steel brake discs, while four piston callipers with 355-millimeter discs are found at the rear. 

In the cockpit, a carbon steering wheel (taken from the GT3 R), a single racing bucket seat (a passenger seat is an optional extra) with six-point harness and a safety cage is fitted to this 935. Air conditioning is also included. The the wood laminated gear knob serves as a reminder to the Carrera GT. 

Porsche says a limited number of 77 units of this new 935 will be produced, each costing €701 948 (R11 528 066,37 on local shores). Deliveries are set to take place from June 2019.
