Suzuki’s second-generation Ertiga – first revealed at the Indonesia International Auto Show back in April 2018 – has officially touched down in South Africa, boasting fresh styling, more space and a new engine.

The local range again comprises three derivatives: a GA-spec manual, a GL manual and a GL automatic.

While the outgoing Ertiga made use of a 70 kW/130 N.m 1,4-litre engine, the new model features Suzuki’s latest naturally aspirated 1,5-litre unit, here offering 77 kW and 138 Nm. Transmission options again comprise a five-speed manual gearbox and a four-speed automatic.

At 4 395 mm, the seven-seater MPV is 130 mm longer than its forebear, while its height has been increased 5 mm to 1 690 mm (the 2 740 mm wheelbase, though, is unchanged). Suzuki says the fact the Ertiga is also 40 mm wider than the original results in more shoulder room for passengers in all three rows of seats.

The Japanese automaker claims the new Ertiga’s seats are more supportive than before. With all pews up, the luggage compartment offers a claimed 199 litres, while Suzuki says dropping the seats reveals a more hard-wearing load space thanks to the fitment of metal plates in all the folding seatbacks. The GL models furthermore gain new roof-mounted air-conditioning outlets to service rear passengers.

The brand has also added the ability to lock the middle row in different configurations (to alter rear legroom). The seatbacks in the third row, meanwhile, can be adjusted by up to 15 degrees.

Up front, you’ll find a new instrument cluster and fresh audio system interface, while GL models gain chrome highlights for the steering wheel. In the lower section of the centre console, Suzuki has added two cooled cupholders and a 12V charging socket, with a second charging socket sited behind the front seats for those in the middle row of passengers. As before, each of the three variants is equipped with two front airbags as well as ABS with EBD. The GL models furthermore gain Isofix child-seat anchors and rear parking sensors.

At launch, the new Ertiga is sold with Suzuki’s promotional five-year/200 000 km warranty as well as a four-year/60 000 km service plan.
