Opel South Africa has released initial details of the new Corsa range that is scheduled to arrive locally later in 2020.

So, what do we know? Well, it’s now been confirmed the engine range will comprise two petrol powerplants at launch in "mid-to-late" 2020.

The entry-level variant will draw its urge from a naturally aspirated 1,2-litre, three-cylinder engine worth 55 kW and 118 N.m. This, of course, is a PSA Group mill (it makes 60 kW and 118 N.m in Peugeot’s base 208, Citroën’s entry-level C3 and Opel’s own Crossland X, for instance) and ships standard with a five-speed manual gearbox.

The other engine (also from the French group) is a turbocharged 1,2-litre three-pot that is expected to offer 96 kW and 230 N.m in SA-spec guise (the detuned 74 kW/205 N.m version is seemingly not on the cards for the local market). While this 96 kW engine is mated to the front wheels via an eight-speed automatic in Europe, Opel SA’s website suggests a six-speed self-shifter will do duty here.

The 75 kW/250 N.m 1,5-litre turbodiesel offered in Europe, meanwhile, is unlikely to make its way to local dealerships (at first, at least), while the same can be said of the all-electric model.

The local distributor’s website also makes mention of a range of features for the new Corsa, including “Eco-LED” headlamps, traffic-sign recognition, blind-spot detection and a “variety of driver assistance systems”. In addition, a seven-inch touchscreen is set to be available locally, although whether it will make its way into the base model remains to be seen.
