Suzuki Auto South Africa has released full details about its new budget-beating S-Presso range, which comprises five variants at launch.

When we broke the news the fresh-faced line-up would kick off at R134 900 – making the base model the cheapest new car in South Africa, undercutting the likes of the Mahindra KUV100 Nxt and Renault Kwid – details about the rest of the range were scarce. But now we know there are three trim levels and two transmission options, with the range topping out at R160 900 (check out full pricing below).

Running on the Japanese firm’s latest Heartec platform, the new Indian-built S-Presso is powered by the same naturally aspirated 1,0-litre, three-cylinder petrol engine used by the Celerio, offering 50 kW at 5 500 r/min and 90 N.m at 3 500 r/min to the front axle via either a five-speed manual gearbox or an automated manual transmission with the same number of cogs. Suzuki claims an average fuel consumption of 4,9 L/100 km, regardless of the chosen cog-swapper.

According to the company, the S-Presso tips the scales at a maximum of 770 kg (with all extras fitted) and features 180 mm of ground clearance. The newcomer measures 3 565 mm long, 1 520 mm wide and 1 549 mm tall, with a wheelbase of 2 380 mm. Luggage capacity is a claimed 239 litres. All five S-Presso derivatives are fitted with 14-inch steel wheels (with wheel covers) as standard and come with a full-sized spare. And safety? Well, all variants feature two airbags along with ABS with EBD, plus rear parking sensors.

The base GL model’s standard features list includes items such as electric windows up front, air conditioning, a multi-information display and rear parking sensors (but seemingly no audio system), while the GL+ variant (for an extra R5 000) adds a seven-inch colour touchscreen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto functionality as well as a reversing camera.

You’ll find the S-Edition derivative at the pointy end of the range, distinguished by silver highlights in the grille, silver skid-plates (fore and aft) and black plastic cladding for the wheel arches and on the lower sections of the doors (which furthermore gain a large silver panel insert). Inside, S-Edition models feature yet more silver detailing on the centre console, air conditioning louvers and door panels.

Suzuki Auto SA says six exterior colours are on offer, along with various “personalised exterior options”, including a colour-coded front grille, a rear spoiler and side cladding options. The S-Presso ships standard with the firm’s (promotional) five-year/200 000 km warranty, a two-year/30 000 km service plan and a year of complementary insurance.
