In June 2019, CARmag.co.za brought you local pricing for the new Toyota Hilux GR-Sport. And now the vehicle has officially launched in South Africa, the Japanese firm has confirmed a few more units have been secured for the local market.

Initially, Toyota South Africa Motors said 535 examples would be offered locally. Now, however, the company says 600 units will be built for SA.

As a reminder, the Hilux GR-Sport double-cab finds itself in the second tier of Toyota’s GR product pyramid, which means it gains suspension upgrades and cosmetic enhancements.

The newcomer is based on the 2,8 GD-6 4x4 6AT double-cab derivative, which means it employs the standard 2,8-litre four-cylinder turbodiesel engine, sending 130 kW and 450 N.m to all four wheels via a six-speed automatic transmission. It is priced at R707 400, which is some R69 900 more than the model on which it is based.

The Hilux GR-Sport features “uprated and tuned” suspension, including shock absorbers with a monotube design and revised damping, which work in conjunction with stiffer front springs (“without sacrificing ride comfort”, says Toyota). The rear leaf spring rates have been left untouched to maintain the Hilux’s payload.

The special model – available in Glacier White, Arizona Red or Attitude Black paint – also gains Gazoo Racing branding, while the honeycomb grille features “Toyota” lettering and a gloss-black finish, along with a GR badge.

In addition, the front foglamp garnish features a red or white outline (depending on the chosen exterior colour), while all models feature a black bonnet and black roof. The side-mirror caps, GR-branded tubular side-steps, over-fenders and model-specific 17-inch alloy wheels (plus the tailgate badging) have all also been given the black treatment.

Inside, you’ll find black leather, red accents and “GR” logos, the latter also included on the start button. Each example includes a production plate and serial number. The facia and door trim gain a piano black finish, while the infotainment system is run through an eight-inch display now integrated into the dashboard, with additional rotary dials for volume and tune functions.
