The new Mercedes-AMG GLE63 S has been revealed, powered by a twin-turbo 4,0-litre V8 (which works with the firm’s EQ Boost starter-alternator system) and spoiling for a fight with the BMW X5 M.

The result is 420 kW/750 N.m in the case of the GLE63 and 450 kW/850 N.m for the flagship GLE63 S (compared with 441 kW and 460 kW from the X5 M and X5 M Competition, respectively). The peak outputs of the AMG models, though, are accompanied by an additional electric output of 16 kW/250 N.m for short periods.

That translates to a claimed zero to 100 km/h time of 4,0 seconds for the GLE63 (which tops out at 250 km/h) and 3,8 seconds for the S derivative (which is limited to 280 km/h).

Each of the two new variants features a 48 V on-board electrical system, fully variable all-wheel drive, a three-stage electronic stability programme, air suspension (with adaptive damping adjustment and active roll stabilisation) and a nine-speed automatic transmission. The seven drive modes include "Trail" and "Sand", in which the suspension is raised by 55 mm.

The GLE63 and GLE63 S both boast an electronically controlled locking differential at the rear axle as standard, while the electromechanical speed-sensitive power steering has a variable ratio.

The high-performance braking system comprises six-piston fixed callipers and 400 x 38 mm discs at the front, plus single-piston floating callipers and 370 x 32 mm discs at the rear. The S variant is set apart by red callipers, while the base variant features grey items. Ceramic brakes with bronze-coloured callipers are also optionally available.

The base model ships standard on 20-inch light-alloy wheels with AMG lettering, while the S variant leaves the factory wearing 21-inch wheels. Other wheel variants with diameters from 21 to 22 inches are optionally offered.

Inside, you’ll find AMG seats upholstered in Nappa leather, complete with an "AMG" badge in the backrests. There’s also a new three-spoke AMG steering wheel with aluminium paddles as well as a centre console with an AMG-specific control panel.
