BMW Group South Africa has announced local pricing for its new 2 Series Gran Coupé range, which comprises three variants at launch.

The F44-generation BMW 2 Series Gran Coupé arrives to take on Mercedes-Benz’s CLA, with 218i, 220d and M235i xDrive derivatives on offer locally.

Unlike the rear-driven 2 Series Coupé, the four-door version runs on BMW’s front-wheel-drive architecture (shared with the new 1 Series), with the range-topping M235i benefitting from an all-wheel-drive arrangement.

The line-up kicks off with the 218i Gran Coupé, priced at R515 000 (excluding CO2 emissions tax). This entry-level variant uses a turbocharged 1,5-litre, three-cylinder petrol unit, offering 103 kW and 220 N.m to the front wheels via a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission.

Next is the 220d Gran Coupé, which starts at R595 000 and generates 140 kW and 400 N.m from its 2,0-litre, four-cylinder turbodiesel heart, directed to the front axle via an eight-speed automatic gearbox.

Finally, the all-paw M235i xDrive Gran Coupé is priced from R725 000, employing a turbocharged 2,0-litre four-cylinder petrol unit worth 225 kW and 450 N.m. The flagship model – which is also fitted with an automatic gearbox featuring eight forward ratios – will hit 100 km/h from standstill in a claimed 4,9 seconds (or one-tenth quicker with the M Performance package specified) before topping out at 250 km/h.

As a reminder, the 2 Series Gran Coupé measures 4 526 mm long, 1 800 mm wide and 1 420 mm tall, sporting a wheelbase of 2 670 mm. The load compartment can swallow 430 litres, according to BMW. Like larger Gran Coupé models in the Munich-based firm’s range, the four-door 2 Series features frameless door glass.
