Chinese firm JAC Motors is set to launch its new T8 double-cab bakkie in South Africa in January 2020, with the line-up comprising two variants.

The new T8 will slot in above the existing T6 range and will be offered in 4x2 and 4x4 guise. The former is priced at R339 900 while the four-wheel-drive derivative comes in at R399 900. Both variants employ a 1,9-litre, four-cylinder turbodiesel engine delivering 100 kW and 320 N.m via a six-speed manual gearbox.

Standard features include Xenon headlamps, LED taillamps, 18-inch alloy wheels (wrapped in 265/60 R18 rubber), a tyre-pressure monitoring system, rear parking sensors, a reversing camera, dual airbags, ABS with EBD, faux-leather seats and a seven-inch touchscreen.

The T8 (which is sold under the Shuailing brand in some markets) measures 5 325 mm long, 1 880 mm wide and 1 830 mm tall, which makes it around the size of a current-generation Toyota Hilux. The load bay, meanwhile, comes in at 1 520 mm by 1 520 mm, while the ground clearance is a claimed 210 mm.

Available in a choice of six colours, the JAC T8 ships standard with a five-year/150 000 km warranty and a five-year/60 000 km service plan (with intervals of 10 000 km, although take note the first service is due at six months or 5 000 km). Upgrading the service plan length to 100 000 km will cost you an extra R12 000, while optionally pushing that number to 150 000 km will add R27 000 to the price.
