Back in early April 2019, we published indicative pricing for the new Audi A1 Sportback range. And now, ahead of the entry-level Audi’s arrival in South Africa in early September, the local arm has published full pricing on its website.

As we initially reported, the local second-generation range will comprise seven variants at launch, with three petrol powertrain options on offer (each featuring an automatic transmission; no manual models are expected to be offered in SA).

Interestingly, though, the base model is a little less expensive than that initial report suggested. The line-up will kick off with the A1 30 TFSI, which employs a turbocharged 1,0-litre, three-cylinder engine worth 85 kW and 200 N.m. That’s enough, says Audi, for a zero to 100 km/h time of 9,4 seconds and a top speed of 203 km/h. Pricing starts at R359 900 for this model. The same powertrain will also be offered in “Advanced” and “S line” trim, with pricing set at R373 900 and R388 900, respectively.

Next is the A1 35 TFSI, powered by a turbocharged 1,5-litre, four-cylinder engine complete with fuel-saving “cylinder-on-demand” technology. This four-pot’s peak outputs are 110 kW and 250 N.m, allowing a dash to three figures in a claimed 7,7 seconds and a top speed of 222 km/h. The base model will be priced at R429 900, with the “Advanced” derivative coming in at R443 900 and the “S line” variant at R458 900.

The A1 40 TFSI will sit at the very summit of the local range, drawing 147 kW and 320 N.m (yes, the same as the Volkswagen Polo GTI) from its familiar EA888 turbocharged 2,0-litre, four-cylinder petrol heart. With a price of R488 000, the flagship A1 will reach 100 km/h from standstill in a claimed 6,5 seconds before topping out at 235 km/h.

Audi SA will furthermore offer a range of packages, including a “Black Styling” package and a “Dynamic” package (the latter standard on the flagship model but adding items such as sports suspension, larger brakes, red callipers, Audi drive select and a “sound actuator” to other variants). Individual options, such as specifying the roof in a contrasting colour (R10 600), upgrading to 18-inch alloys (R24 600) and fitting a Bang & Olufsen sound system (R9 500), will also be available.

While the A1 will ship standard with a digital instrument cluster, the Audi virtual cockpit will form part of the optional "Technology" package. Ticking the “Edition #1” box (R37 000 in the case of the 30 TFSI and R19 000 in the case of the 35 TFSI and 40 TFSI) on any S line variant finished in “Python Yellow Metallic” paint, meanwhile, will add items such as black 18-inch seven-spoke rotor-style alloys, darkened LED lighting and black exterior detailing.
