A special edition version of the Toyota Land Cruiser 79 double-cab bakkie has quietly arrived in South Africa wearing the “Namib” badge.

Based on the flagship 4,5D-4D LX V8 variant, the Land Cruiser 79 Namib boasts a smattering of accessories as standard. Priced at R893 600, the newcomer is some R125 000 more expensive than the derivative on which it’s based.

So, what do you get for the extra outlay? Well, the most obvious update is the addition of a hefty black steel front bumper complete with ARB-branded LED spotlamps, while the black mesh grille features “Toyota” lettering rather than the Japanese firm’s logo.

Furthermore, the load-bay gains an “inner-skin” lining while the standard tool set includes an air pump. “Namib” exterior badges are also included.

And the wheels? Well, although the Land Cruiser 79 Namib features 16-inch items like the standard LX V8, its tyres bear a slightly higher profile (265/75 R16 versus 265/70 R16). And, as far as we can tell, the Namib also gains an uprated suspension system (adding 35 mm to the vehicle’s overall height), complete with Old Man Emu shocks.

Inside, you’ll find rubber mats, a special overhead console and Namib-branded seat covers. The Land Cruiser 79 Namib will be offered in a choice of two exterior colours: Ivory White and Sand Beige.

Under the bonnet, nothing's changed, which means the 4,5-litre turbodiesel V8 sends 151 kW and 430 N.m to all four corners via a five-speed manual gearbox (with a low-range transfer case).
