The updated Opel Astra has been revealed. And while the styling changes are subtle (to say the least), under the skin the hatchback has gained a range of new engines and transmissions.

The new powertrains, of course, come courtesy of the PSA Group under which the Rüsselsheim-based firm now falls.

Thus, engine options now include a 1,2-litre three-cylinder petrol unit offered in three states of tune: 81 kW/195 N.m, 96 kW/225 N.m and 107 kW/225 N.m. There’s also a 1,4-litre petrol powerplant offering 107 kW and 236 N.m, mated to a continuously variable transmission (the 1,2-litre derivatives, meanwhile, employ a six-speed manual gearbox as standard).

In addition, a 1,5-litre, three-cylinder turbodiesel unit will be available in Europe in two states of tune: 77 kW/260 N.m and 90 kW/300 N.m. While a six-speed manual cog-swapper ships standard on both, the more powerful oil-burner can be specified with a nine-speed automatic transmission.

Opel says the updated Astra’s chassis has been “further developed”, with the five-door hatchback gaining new shock absorbers for improved comfort. An optional sports chassis, meanwhile, will also be offered, featuring stiffer dampers, more direct steering and a Watts linkage at the rear axle.

Inside, the various infotainment options available in Europe will all be compatible with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, with the flagship version offering an eight-inch touchscreen.
