The new Hyundai Venue has been revealed at the 2019 New York International Auto Show, slotting in at the bottom of the Korean brand’s burgeoning SUV range.

While its general (boxy) proportions may well remind you of the Creta, the entry-level Venue is actually quite a bit smaller. Indeed, at 4 036 mm long, it’s a full 244 mm shorter nose to tail than its Indian-built sibling. Interestingly, though, at 2 520 mm its wheelbase is a mere 70 mm down on that of the Creta.

[UPDATE: the SA-spec model will actually measure 3 995 mm long, with a wheelbase of 2 500 mm]

And inside? Well, Hyundai says the Venue offers “appealing interior space” and a “comfortable cabin”. Luggage room, meanwhile, is expected to be a little less than offered by the Kona.

Up front, you’ll find a pair of USB ports, 3,5-inch TFT instrument cluster display, a reversing camera and a leather-wrapped steering wheel.

In North America, at least, the Venue will furthermore be offered with an eight-inch colour infotainment screen (with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay), a navigation system, heated front seats as well as various big-car safety features, including forward collision-avoidance assist, lane keeping assist, blind-spot collision warning and rear cross-traffic warning.

Hyundai hasn’t yet revealed much in the way of official powertrain details, but we do know the Venue will be offered in some markets with a naturally aspirated 1,6-litre petrol engine driving the front wheels via either a six-speed manual gearbox or a continuously variable transmission. We understand the new Venue (earlier referred to as the Styx) is indeed on the cards for South Africa, but local specifications have, of course, not yet been confirmed.
