Toyota in Europe has taken the wraps off its new Corolla Sedan GR Sport model, giving its saloon model a mild Gazoo Racing makeover.

The newcomer joins the GR Sport version of the Corolla hatchback revealed in early 2019.

Featuring what the Japanese firm describes as “a look inspired by Toyota’s performance-focused GR models”, the GR Sport grade references the livery colours of Gazoo Racing.

It ditches chrome-effect trim in favour of piano-black features on the exterior, including the grille, side-mirror caps, centre pillars and side sills. In addition, the Corolla Sedan GR Sport features black garnish that forms a C-shaped frame at the corners of the front bumper.

Round back, there’s an integrated bootlid spoiler, finished in the car’s body colour, black trim above the licence plate and the requisite “GR Sport” badging.

The newcomer’s alloy wheels are finished in black with a contrasting bright-machined finish and the “GR” red ring round the centre cap. Two 10-spoke designs are available, one measuring 17 inches in diameter and the other 18 inches.

Inside, you’ll find black headlining, brushed aluminium scuff plates (bearing the GR logo) and a steering wheel wrapped in perforated leather. The front sports seats, meanwhile, are upholstered in a combination of black cloth and synthetic leather, with a contrasting vertical stitch pattern in white and red.

In Europe, the Corolla Sedan GR Sport will be offered with the existing 1,8-litre hybrid and 1,6-litre petrol powertrains (so, no extra under-bonnet oomph), with production set to commence in November 2020. No word yet if Toyota South Africa Motors has any plans to offer something similar locally.

The local Corolla Sedan range, of course, includes naturally aspirated 1,8- and 2,0-litre petrol engines, with a hybrid version seemingly on the horizon.
