Volvo has revealed its new XC40 Recharge, the Swedish company’s first fully electric car (Polestar, of course, is now a standalone company).

Based on the standard XC40, the newcomer is the first model in Volvo’s planned Recharge range of fully electric vehicles, encompassing all chargeable Volvos (be it fully electric or with a plug-in hybrid powertrain).

The new model’s electric all-wheel-drive powertrain offers a claimed range of more than 400 km on a single charge and output as high as 300 kW. The firm says the battery charges from empty to 80 percent of its capacity in 40 minutes on a fast-charger system.

The obligatory zero to 100 km/h sprint is taken care of in a claimed 4,9 seconds, while top speed is limited to 180 km/h.

Interestingly, the XC40 Recharge is also the first Volvo to feature the new infotainment system powered by Google’s Android operating system and fully integrated with Volvo On Call.

Volvo Cars says it plans to launch a fully electric car every year for the next five years.

“We have said this several times before: for Volvo Cars, the future is electric,” said Håkan Samuelsson, president and chief executive officer of Volvo Cars.

“Today we take a major new step in that direction with the launch of our fully electric XC40 and the Recharge car line.”
