Ford has released footage of a new Bronco prototype being put through its paces off the beaten track in the United States.

The 42-second clip uploaded to YouTube shows off-road racer Brad Lovell testing what the Blue Oval brand describes as an “experimental” Bronco prototype in the deserts of Johnson Valley in California.

The disguised prototype in the video appears to take the form of a shortened Ranger – bear in mind the final product is expected to borrow the T6 platform from the bakkie (and the Everest) – wearing a small canopy.

Power is likely to come from the firm’s turbocharged 2,3-litre, four-cylinder petrol engine or the larger, turbocharged 2,7-litre V6 petrol unit. No diesel? Well, considering reports suggest the Bronco won’t be built in right-hand-drive (initially, at least), we’re guessing Ford will focus on petrol power for North America.
